The piece truly comes alive when it stops explaining and lets the scenes speak: your father at the diner, the embarrassment in front of the mayor, the duffel bag full of awards never displayed, your mother who “hugged me with her voice.” In those moments you are no longer analyzing inheritance, you are allowing it to appear in the world. And that is where the piece becomes deeply powerful.

This is an incredibly moving and beautifully written chapter. I especially loved the vivid portrait of your parents, your father bursting with so much pride that he wanted to announce you to the world, and your mother serving as his quiet, stable foundation. The balance between deep family history and those humorous, relatable diner moments is absolutely masterful. Thank you for sharing such a vulnerable and rich piece of your journey.
